How to let go of absorbed energy – and consciously hold your own energy

The other day I was standing there after a completely ordinary shopping trip and noticed how tired I suddenly was. Not physically tired. More like empty, as if someone had pulled something out of me without me noticing.

Do you know that feeling? That kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from what you yourself have done, but from everything you picked up along the way without wanting to.

Sensitive people have a very open field. That’s a gift, really—they notice things before others even perceive them. But this very open field also absorbs what doesn’t belong to them at all: moods from colleagues, tension in a room, the unspoken restlessness of a stranger at the checkout.

How you notice it’s not yours

Sometimes it’s a feeling that’s suddenly there, without any obvious cause. You were fine before, and then, after a conversation or a crowded room, you feel heavy, irritated, or strangely empty. That’s often a first sign: when a feeling arrives faster than you can explain it, it’s worth asking whether it’s even yours.

What actually helps

There’s no one trick, but a few things that really make a difference.

Breath is one of them—not as a magic formula, but as a simple, immediately available way back into your own body. A few conscious, deeper breaths pull you out of what you’ve just absorbed and back into what actually belongs to you.

Just as important: consciously asking yourself whether a feeling is really yours right now. This small, honest inner inquiry often creates distance just by asking it.

And then sometimes you need a real moment of clearing, afterward, in quiet, so that what you’ve been carrying can actually release. Not just pushed aside briefly, but truly let go.

For exactly this last step, I’ve recorded a guided meditation with brainwave music that supports you in gently releasing foreign energies and arriving back clearly with yourself. You can download it for free and listen whenever you need it—in the morning, during the day, or in the evening to fall asleep.
